Privacy Policy

MooCheck is an iPhone app made by Night Ferry Labs ("we", "us"). This policy explains what MooCheck sends, to whom, and what is kept. The short version: there's no account, no ads and no tracking. Your scan history stays on your iPhone. Label photos and ingredient text leave your phone only to be checked, and we don't keep them.
What stays on your iPhone
Your scan history (photos, ingredient text, results, saved products) and your settings are stored only on your iPhone. They're included in your iPhone backups if you have backups turned on. Deleting the app deletes them, and you can clear your history anytime in Settings.
What leaves your iPhone, and why
| When | What is sent | To |
|---|---|---|
| You scan a barcode | The barcode number | Open Food Facts, to look up the product and its ingredients |
| A label needs an AI check | The label photo and the text the phone read from it, or the product's ingredient list | Our server, which passes it to Anthropic's Claude and returns the answer |
| Calories per spoon are estimated | The product name and ingredient list | Our server and Anthropic's Claude |
| Every AI request | A code from your Apple subscription that proves it's active | Our server |
MooCheck asks for permission to use the camera, and only uses it when you scan. Photos you pick from your library are only read when you choose them.
What our server keeps
- Not your photos or label text. They pass through to the AI and aren't stored.
- A count of your AI checks for the current period, so the monthly limit works. It's tied to the ID of your Apple subscription, not to your name or email.
- A record of each AI call: the time, the same subscription ID, which AI model answered, and how much it cost. We use this to watch costs and keep the service running.
- AI answers for barcodes: the barcode, its ingredient list and the AI's answer, kept for 30 days so the next person who scans the same product gets an instant answer. This isn't linked to you.
Purchases
Subscriptions are handled by Apple. We never see your name, email address or payment details. Apple gives the app a signed record of the subscription (an ID, the plan, and its dates), which our server checks.
The companies involved
- Anthropic runs Claude, the AI that checks labels. Under Anthropic's commercial terms, it doesn't train its models on what MooCheck sends, and it handles the data under its own privacy policy.
- Cloudflare hosts our server and this website. Like any web host, it handles IP addresses to deliver requests and keeps short-lived technical logs. See Cloudflare's privacy policy.
- Open Food Facts is the free product database used for barcode lookups. See its privacy policy.
- Apple handles the App Store, subscriptions and payments.
We don't sell or share your information with anyone else, don't show ads, and don't use analytics or tracking tools.
Children
MooCheck isn't directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from them.
Your choices
- Turn off AI checks in Settings, and MooCheck won't send photos or text for AI checks.
- Clear your history in Settings, or delete the app, to remove everything stored on your iPhone.
- To ask about or delete the usage records tied to your subscription ID, email us at support@nightferrylabs.com.
Changes
If we change this policy, we'll update it here and change the date at the top. If a change affects what's sent or kept, we'll also mention it in the app.
